When to go: June to early October, the only months the Abano and Goderdzi passes are open

Few countries pack this much mountain drama into a single republic. From Tbilisi, three roads fan out into the Greater Caucasus: the storied Military Highway to Kazbek, the terrifying unpaved track to the towers of Tusheti, and the lonely Goderdzi crossing toward the Black Sea. None are easy. All are unforgettable.

Day 1

The Military Highway

Overnight: Stepantsminda

North from the old capital over the Jvari Pass to the glacial valley beneath Mount Kazbek, the most famous road in the Caucasus.

Day 2

Overnight: Omalo

East into Kakheti, then the Abano Pass, an unpaved Soviet track to the medieval towers of Tusheti, one of the most dangerous drives on earth.

Day 3

West to Adjara

Overnight: Batumi

The long, lonely Goderdzi crossing from the highlands down through beech forest toward the subtropical Black Sea coast.
