Madeira North Coast (ER101)
ER101São Vicente to Porto Moniz · Madeira
Madeira's dramatic north-coast road between São Vicente and Porto Moniz, hugging cliffs above the Atlantic past Seixal and waterfall-streaked rock.
The active ER101 between São Vicente and Porto Moniz runs along Madeira's wild north shore, where green mountains tumble straight into the sea. Through Seixal it skirts cliffs and the famous natural lava pools, passing tunnels and points where waterfalls still spill toward the road, a tamer successor to the abandoned old cliff road but no less scenic. Modern sections are wide and easy, while older stretches narrow between rock and ocean. Weather off the Atlantic can turn quickly, with cloud, spray and wet tarmac common even when the south coast is sunny. Mind sudden Atlantic cloud and wet tarmac, water and debris washing across the road, and narrow older sections beside cliffs.
