Transbucegi
DJ713Sinaia to Cabana Piatra Arsă · Bucegi Mountains
A dead-end alpine climb from Sinaia onto the Bucegi plateau near the Babele and Sphinx rock formations, the lesser-known third of Romania's great trans-mountain roads.
Branching off the DN71 just above Sinaia, the DJ713 Transbucegi climbs hard through the Dichiu saddle and out onto the high Bucegi plateau, finishing near Cabana Piatra Arsă at around 1,950m. It is shorter than Transfăgărășan or Transalpina but trades on the same thrill: an open, sinuous mountain road climbing above the treeline to wind-sculpted scenery, with the famous Babele and Sphinx formations a short walk away. Most of it is paved, the upper run is a spectacular cul-de-sac, and it is busy with day-trippers in summer. It is a there-and-back drive rather than a crossing. Mind the abrupt unfenced drops on the upper plateau, fog that rolls in fast at altitude, and a strict seasonal closure with the road shut in winter.
