The DN7C Transfăgărășan climbs from Cârțișoara to Bâlea Lac at over 2,000 m, a famously theatrical stack of hairpins carved across the Făgăraș mountains and made famous worldwide as one of the great driving roads. Open only in high summer; mind the altitude weather, the crowds and coaches, and the unguarded drops.
