On the road

The road runs from Tarbet to Crianlarich. Between Tarbet and Inverarnan the A82 is pinned between the loch and steep ground, with the railway alongside. It often narrows to less than 6 metres, with tight bends and poor forward visibility, and lorries find it hard going. Transport Scotland plans to widen this 10.6-mile (17 km) stretch. One pinch point is already fixed. At Pulpit Rock, a viaduct opened in 2015 ended more than 30 years of single-lane running under traffic lights.

Inveruglas is a good place to stop. It has a car park, a visitor centre and a café. An Ceann Mòr, an 8-metre pyramid, has 31 steps up to a view of Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps. Loch Sloy power station stands opposite the car park, and in summer a small ferry crosses the loch to Inversnaid.

The Falls of Falloch lie about 4 miles (7 km) south-west of Crianlarich. They are a short walk from a small car park that often fills up. A steel viewing platform called Woven Sound looks over the falls and the deep pool below, known as Rob Roy’s Bathtub. Lines from Dorothy Wordsworth’s 1803 diary are cut into its steel.
