The A841 follows the dramatic coast from Brodick north to Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, past Goatfell, raised beaches and the sweeping climb over the Boguillie. ‘Scotland in miniature’ on a single road; mind the single-track sections, livestock, and the ferry traffic at each end.
On the road
The road runs from Brodick to Lochranza. The A841 is the only A-road on Arran, and on this stretch it keeps to the east coast through Corrie and Sannox. After Sannox it makes its only real move inland, climbing over the pass at Boguillie before dropping down to Lochranza.
Brodick Castle, for centuries a seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, sits just outside Brodick and belongs to the National Trust for Scotland. The castle opens in summer and its country park all year. The main path up Goatfell, at 875 metres the island’s highest point, starts nearby at Cladach. Corrie, about 6 miles (10 km) north of Brodick, offers a shorter, steeper way up. Its two small quays once shipped local sandstone to the mainland.
At Lochranza a ruined castle stands on a spit of land in the bay. It began as a 13th-century hall-house and is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland. The village also has the Arran distillery, opened in 1995. Ferries reach Brodick from Ardrossan or Troon, depending on which port is in use. In summer a short crossing also links Lochranza with Claonaig on Kintyre. CalMac runs both and advises booking ahead.
