A toll-gated switchback climb to the rim of a vast Pyrenean glacial cirque.
From near Gèdre the D922 climbs past Héas to the lip of the Cirque de Troumouse, the largest glacial amphitheatre in the French Pyrenees. The upper section is a ladder of very tight switchbacks on a narrow shelf, finishing above 2,000 metres at a high pastoral bowl ringed by 3,000 metre peaks. It is single-track in places with passing only at the bends, so progress is slow. Mind the very tight blind hairpins, wandering livestock on the open mountain, and the late-spring snow that keeps the upper road shut.
