Gotthard Pass (Tremola)
561Airolo to Gotthard Pass · Ticino
Switzerland's most famous cobbled pass, 24 granite-sett hairpins up to the Gotthard summit.
The Tremola is the preserved 19th-century carriage road up the south ramp of the Gotthard, running on original granite cobbles from above Airolo to the 2106m summit. It is the alternative to the modern asphalt road and is widely cited as the longest road monument in Switzerland, with roughly 24 tight hairpins stacked over a few kilometres. The cobbles are uneven and slick when wet, and you can often see the road doubling back below you. Mind the loose, polished setts in rain, the narrow two-way passing on the bends, and cyclists and motorcyclists who flock here in summer.
