Single-lane Italy-Austria pass with light-controlled one-way traffic above Anterselva.
The SP44 climbs from the Anterselva valley past its lake up a famously steep, narrow ramp to the 2052m Staller Sattel on the Austrian border. Because the Italian side is single-lane, traffic is released one way at a time by lights in alternating windows each hour, which gives the drive its singular rhythm. The hairpins are tight and the asphalt good but unforgiving. Mind the timed one-way light system you must wait for, the single-lane width with no room to pass, and the May to October seasonal opening only.
