The only road into the heart of the Czech Giant Mountains follows the young Elbe river upstream through a deep forested gorge to the resort of Špindlerův Mlýn, beneath the highest peaks in Bohemia.
From Vrchlabí the road enters the Labe gorge at once, tracing the river through dense mountain forest; the canyon narrows dramatically at Studené Koleno where the wall forces the road onto a shelf above the river, before opening into Špindlerův Mlýn amid the ski slopes and meadows of Krkonoše National Park.
