The B3 along the north bank of the Danube through the Wachau, 33 km from Krems to Emmersdorf opposite Melk, past Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen, Spitz and Willendorf, between terraced vineyards and apricot orchards.

From Stein, on the western edge of Krems, the B3 follows the north bank of the Danube upstream through the Wachau, the valley between Krems and Melk that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. At Dürnstein it passes the town in a tunnel, opened in 1959, below the ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart was held in 1193. It then runs through Weißenkirchen and Spitz, both with ferries that take cars to the south bank, and Willendorf, where the Venus of Willendorf was found during railway construction in 1908. Beyond Aggsbach Markt it reaches Emmersdorf, where a bridge opened in 1972 crosses to Melk and its Benedictine abbey. It is a two-lane road with long 100 km/h stretches and lower limits through the villages, and the north bank carries more traffic than the quieter B33 on the south bank.
