Glen Lyon
C448Fortingall to Bridge of Balgie · Perth and Kinross
Walter Scott's longest, loneliest, loveliest glen, single-track from Fortingall to Bridge of Balgie.
Glen Lyon is often called Scotland's longest enclosed glen, and Sir Walter Scott is widely quoted describing it as the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland. The single-track road follows the River Lyon west from the ancient yew at Fortingall, through the wooded narrows of Pass of Lyon and on past the tearoom at Bridge of Balgie, inside a National Scenic Area. It is intimate driving rather than fast, with blind bends, frequent passing places and a genuinely remote feel. Mind oncoming traffic on blind single-track bends, tight stone bridges, and sheep wandering onto the road.
