Mount Buffalo Road
C535Porepunkah to Mount Buffalo plateau (chalet / Lake Catani) · Victorian Alps
A historic hairpin climb from Porepunkah onto the granite-tor plateau of Mount Buffalo, engineered in 1908.
Mount Buffalo Road leaves the Great Alpine Road at Porepunkah and climbs the flank of Mount Buffalo on a sealed run of broad hairpins engineered by Carlo Catani back in 1908. As you gain height the road opens onto views over the Ovens Valley before reaching the granite-tor plateau, the old chalet, Lake Catani and the walk to The Horn. It is a graceful, historic touring climb through snow gums rather than a white-knuckle pass, ending in one of Victoria's most striking alpine landscapes. Mind the tight hairpins with limited overtaking, ice and snow in winter, and rock debris and cyclists on the climb.
