Germany's highest paved mountain pass, deep in the Allgäu Alps
The Riedbergpass crosses the Allgäu Alps between Obermaiselstein and Balderschwang, its road topping out around 1,400 m as the highest drivable mountain pass in Germany. Steep ramps reach about 16% as the route winds up through forest and high pasture near the Austrian border. The gradient and tight bends make it hard going for underpowered or heavily laden vehicles, snow and ice can close it in winter, and it is popular with cyclists and motorcyclists in season.
