The A832 runs from Kinlochewe along the shore of Loch Maree beneath Slioch to the coast at Gairloch, one of the great Highland drives. It is narrow and winding with single-track stretches; use the passing places, and stop only where it is safe to take in the view.
On the road
The road runs from Kinlochewe to Gairloch. Just north-west of Kinlochewe, the A832 passes the Beinn Eighe visitor centre at Aultroy. The reserve, set up in 1951, was Britain’s first National Nature Reserve and protects old Caledonian pinewood. A little further on is the Coille na Glas Leitir car park. An underpass beneath the road leads to a woodland trail and a longer mountain trail.
Loch Maree is about 13.5 miles (22 km) long and holds more than 60 small islands as well as five large wooded ones. It is one of the main breeding sites in Britain for black-throated divers. Slioch, 981 metres high, towers over the far shore at the Kinlochewe end.
Queen Victoria stayed at the Loch Maree Hotel at Talladale in 1877, and Victoria Falls, in Slattadale Forest, is named after her visit. A short path from its car park leads to a viewing area, and the car park itself looks out over the loch. Past Slattadale the road leaves the loch, climbs, and then drops to the sea at Gair Loch.
