A fast Highland run to the fishing port of Ullapool past the Corrieshalloch Gorge.
The A835 sweeps north from Braemore toward Ullapool, passing the deep cleft of the Corrieshalloch Gorge with the mountains of Wester Ross all around. It flows well but is a working road with logging traffic and deer; keep your speed to the sight lines.
However long it takes to get up here, this stretch repays it. Somewhere along the way the shoulders drop, every single time.
Why we picked it
On the road
The road runs from Braemore to Ullapool. It starts at Braemore Junction, where the A832 turns off to the west, then drops down Strath More to the head of Loch Broom. From there it follows the shore of the loch into Ullapool. This is the trunk road to the Stornoway ferry, so expect ferry traffic as well as visitors.
Corrieshalloch Gorge comes almost straight away. The gorge is nearly a mile (1.5 km) long and around 60 metres deep, and the Falls of Measach drop 46 metres inside it. A short, steep path leads down to a Victorian suspension bridge over the falls. It is the work of Sir John Fowler, one of the Forth Bridge engineers. A viewing platform juts out from the far side. The National Trust for Scotland owns the site, and its visitor centre, opened in 2023, has a café.
Ullapool was founded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society as a herring port, to a plan by Thomas Telford. CalMac runs a car ferry from the harbour to Stornoway on Lewis. If you are taking a car across, book ahead and check in at least 45 minutes before sailing.
